Ever since then, Springfield has been one of the major distributors of 1911s in the world. Although it was initially a Colt product, it didn’t take very long for the Springfield Armory to get involved. Originally designed by weapons pioneer John Browning, the 1911 is arguably America’s most distinguished war veteran.
1911 Overview Weapons pioneer, John Browning Springfield Armory has christened the M1911 as “ the most revered and time-honored semi-auto handgun ever designed”, and it’s easy to see why. Nevertheless, Springfield’s modern take on the 1911 has become the benchmark by which all other 1911s are compared. In my experience, I’ve handled some of the most famous 1911 variants, including Smith & Wesson’s, Taurus’, Remington’s, and Sig Sauer’s take on the legendary firearm.
In fact, of all their celebrated achievements, the most impressive may be how they’ve managed to stay true to the 1911’s classic outline while still incorporating several key performance and design upgrades. The frame of course has the maker's name and address, along with a serial number starting with 'WW'.Although the M1911 may be one of the most iconic pistols ever created, you’d hardly know that by looking at Springfield’s new and improved models. The left side of the slide is simply marked 'MODEL 1911-A1' in plain block letters, and the right side is marked 'SPRINGFIELD ARMORY' in identical fashion. From 1970 to 1976 the serial numbers had a prefix of '70G', from 1976 to 1980 they had a suffix of 'G70' which changed to a prefix of '70B' from 1980 until 1983 when production ceased. The major changes were a slightly heavier slide and a slotted collet barrel bushing. Colt introduced this model in 1970 as a newer version of the Model 1911A1. A serial number preceded by a 'NO' instead of a 'No' indicates manufacture by Remington-Rand. A serial number preceded by an 'S' indicates an M1911A1 manufact- ured by Singer (not many of these around - an understatement) 3. Colt duplicated the following serial number blocks: 60000 pistols in the Ithaca range 804 41696 pistols in the Remington Rand range 900 4171 pistols in the US&S range.
